The primary strategy within the CWIP is to target management practices that are effective at reducing nitrogen, with the greatest relative influence on dissolved oxygen (DO) in the Chesapeake Bay, and minimized cost per pound of nitrogen reduced. The strategy is to be employed entirely within the Susquehanna River basin. Within this strategy, outreach and implementation will focus on three core areas of agricultural and urban forestry BMP: natural filters, sustainable farm practices, and nutrient reduction practices. For a full description and reasoning for this strategy, see the full CWIP.
To support progress towards CWIP milestones, Chesapeake Conservancy identified areas throughout the Susquehanna river basin where a suite of agricultural best management practices (BMPs) could be implemented to reduce nutrient and sediment pollution. This data was visualized in an interactive web viewer to inform implementation planning efforts. Explore the Experience Builder Application here.
